(26.01.2017) - Christmas party-goers aid Darmstädter Tafel

Those of you who attended the EUMETSAT Christmas Party in December have raised €4,370 for the local charity chosen by the Staff Association Committee (SAC), the Darmstädter Tafel, through the donation of the cost of the tickets.

Die Tafeln is a German food bank which was founded in 1993 and currently has more than 900 branches. In 2014, 1.5 million people a week used food banks in Germany and this number, unfortunately, is increasing, in part due to the increased number of people seeking asylum in recent years.

Die Tafeln branches aid those who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger. They supply food to marginalised people who are usually not covered by the benefit system or who may be reluctant to approach more formal food banks.

Die Tafeln distributes food and drinks which may no longer be sold commercially and would otherwise be destroyed – although still fresh - to the most deprived or for a small fee. In Germany, one third of the recipients are children and adolescents. Food banks operate in many other European countries, North America, Africa and Asia.

Director-General Alain Ratier and Karim Haggouchi, representing the SAC presented a giant cheque to Mr Wentrup, representing the Darmstädter Tafel e.V on 26 January.
